Infection is a common cause. For some patients, the recurrence of nephrotic syndrome is closely related with infection, especially viral upper respiratory tract infection (i.e. Cold). A cold could make the protein in urine be positive, sometimes it would lead to edema. Protein in urine would disappear with the cold getting better. If you do not remain on high alert to infection after treatment, inflammations may occur again, and correspondingly they would induce to the reappearance of nephrotic syndrome. Therefore, patients with nephrotic syndrome should not neglect infections and colds, which may threaten their lives.
Hormone therapy is the most fundamental reason. Hormone therapy is the most common treatment of nephrotic syndrome. Patients with nephrotic syndrome take prednison for a long time, and cortical atrophy would appear on their adrenal gland. So when they stop taking drugs, their adrenal gland would not be able to secrete hormone again, leading to hormone deficiency in their bodies. And hormone treatment could not treat nephrotic syndrome fundamentally, so it would appear again. Nephrotic syndrome is easily to relapse, or even lead to adrenocortical crisis, which would pose a serious health threat to patients.
Non-standard use of drugs is a reason easy to be guarded against. Some patients with nephrotic syndrome act on their own to stop taking drugs or shorten the period of treatment. And they would stop using hormone once the edema and protein in urine disappear or change to other medicines. These behaviors would lead to recurrence of diseases or make the hormone therapy become invalid. Therefore, patients should behave under the guidance of doctors strictly. Take medicine on time according to the doctors’ advices.
